Up for your consideration, is a genuine State of Alabama $.25 note. It is dated January 1st 1863, issued right during the Civil War. Catalog # Cr6. 2nd Series. Hand written serial number of 74109. Plate letter A. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED+ condition.
If you like notes with nice eye appeal, then here is one for you. Dark printing. Good clarity. Clean, crisp paper. Fully framed, with a full borderline visible all around.
The orange "25 Cts over print color is strong and vivid.
This note reads:
"The State of Alabama will pay to bearer in Confederate States Treasury Notes when presented at the States Treasury in sums of Twenty dollars & Upwards".
Essentially Uncirculated, with just a slight bit of "teller" handling at the right side. There are a couple of very small pinholes.
NO folds, tears, ink erosion, stains, or severe condition issues to mention. The top paper edge is a bit rough, but that is in the extra margin area, which is well above the frame line.
At the right side of the note, there is a portrait of Mrs. Juliet Opie Hopkins. According to historical documents, she sold her estates in New York, Virginia, and Alabama at the beginning of the Civil War, and donated the money to the Confederate government to establish hospitals in Alabama for sick and wounded soldiers. As the War raged on, she was relentless in her efforts in doing what she could to arrange medical care for wounded southern troops.
After giving nearly everything for this cause, she lived the rest of her life in poverty. At her death, she was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, and the members of the Alabama congressional delegation served as her pall bearers.
A really nice example of this small denominational issue. Your satisfaction is always guaranteed. Price: RESERVED |
